TIBERIAN SUN is the long-awaited sequel to the original Command and Conquer games. For a long time any real-time strategy game that came out was compared to the mighty Command and Conquer. Since then there have been a lot of excellent real-time strategy games, but also some fairly dire ones.

Thankfully, Tiberian Sun does live up to expectations. It is basically a bigger and much better looking Command and Conquer. All the old favourite characters are back, and the storyline has hardly changed a bit.

The year is 2030, and the United Nations-backed Global Defence Initiative (GDI) and the evil Brotherhood of Nod are battling it out for control of the world’s supply of Tiberium, an exotic new mineral that seems to have sprung up from nowhere.

Tiberium can be used to power huge military bases, as well as for awesome new weapons and troop types. It also has an unfortunate mutating effect on humans.

The Forgotten are tribes of mutant outcasts that have been formed by exposure to Tiberium. They see both the GDI and Brotherhood of Nod as enemies.

In Tiberian Sun you lead the forces of the GDI or Brotherhood of Nod. Unusually for these games, it’s actually more fun playing as the good guys in Tiberian Sun. The GDI gets better tanks and heavy equipment, although the Brotherhood of Nod gets some powerful Cyborg commandoes later in the game.

Controlling the battle is quite easy. You select a unit or group of units by the traditional mouse point-and-click. There are some useful features, such as the ability to form units into a designated grouping, or placing waypoints. Targeting enemy is as easy as clicking on them.

The graphics in Tiberian Sun are a marked improvement over the original. Playing in top resolution looks great, with excellent detail of both troops and terrain. There is a huge variety of background scenery, such as ruined cities, jungles, and ice flows. The lighting effects are brilliant, with lightning strikes, searchlights, and laser cannons all looking very real.

There are cut-scenes to help the story along, and these are quite neat. The sound is good too, with gunfire and explosions getting louder as you scroll the map towards the action.

Tiberian Sun is Westwood Studios and costs $99 (including gst). It requires a Pentium 166-megahertz processor, 32 megabytes of Ram, 16-bit colour graphics card with 4Mb of Ram, quad-speed CD-Rom, mouse, and soundcard.

You can play multiplayer via modem, the Internet, and network. A separate disc is supplied for both Nod and the GDI, so you can set up network or modem games straight away.

Tiberian Sun is a definite improvement over the original in terms of graphics and new units. The story is familiar, and it isn’t hard to guess the developments during the game. Still, Tiberian Sun is a fun game; quite easy to get into, with the ability to get you well and truly hooked.
