Ultima Ix: Ascension

ULTIMA IX: Ascension promises to be the last in the long running Ultima role-playing games. Many people think the Ultima games are the best computer role-playing games ever, (although I would find it hard to move Baldur’s Gate down into second place).

Console Games

THE three main console systems – Playstation, Saturn, and Nintendo 64 – have had quite a few new releases over the past months. I’ve been sent several review copies, and in this review I’ll do a quick run-through of some of them, concentrating unashamedly on my favourites.

These games are similar in price to PC games, ranging from $80 to $120.

Pandora’s Box

MICROSOFT recently had their annual games launch in Auckland. It was a fun day, and great to have a chat with Bruce Shelley, co-creator of Civilization, and the man behind Age of Empires and the upcoming Age of Empires 2: Age of Kings.

Pandora’s Box isn’t one of Mr Shelley’s games, but its designer is almost as famous. Alexey Pajitnov was responsible for the Tetris games, which have probably been responsible for more downtime since Rubik’s Cube. He has now come up with Pandora’s Box, which is packed full with puzzles.

The story behind Pandora’s Box is that seven mythical tricksters have escaped from the box, and it is up to you to return them to captivity. To do this you must solve the puzzles they solve – all 350 of them.

Dark Forces

Well everyone has surely seen the Star Wars movies, and most computer owners have played Doom, so describing Dark Forces shouldn’t be too hard. Instead of running around Mars blowing things up, you’ll be running around Imperial bases, cities, and ships, blowing things up. (That was pretty easy).

Dark Forces is the fourth game by LucasArts based on the Star Wars story, following on from Tie-Fighter, X-Wing, and Rebel Assault. This one is the first to really stray from the storyline.

Soldiers At War

SOLDIERS AT WAR is a squad level wargame set in World War II. You lead a squad of American GIs through a campaign encompassing North Africa, France, Germany, and more.

The game is in the mould of all those 1950s war movies, full of gung-ho Americans saving the day against all odds. Thankfully, it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

better graphics, it could be the game of 1998. I am betting that turn-based tactical combat has run its course, with the real-time genre here to stay. ( Lets hope not...-Ed.)

Your squad will have to destroy V2 sites, assault Monte Cassino, attack submarine bases, and survive D-Day itself.
