Harpoon Ii

Games supplied by Quay Computers, Wellington

The modern Admiral has a host of forces to command, including ships, carriers, submarines, planes, and helicopters. Now you get the chance to be in charge of a modern Navy, and co-ordinating all these diverse assets isn’t easy!

The original Harpoon was probably the best-selling of all modern naval warfare simulations, and had the reputation as being the most realistic. Harpoon2 seeks to improve on that reputation, and is bigger, more detailed, and even more complex than before.

The Rise And Rule Of Ancient Empires

The Rise and Rule of Ancient Empires is a lot like Civilization 2 in many ways. You are in command of an ancient culture and must guide its growth through the years. Starting off with a single city, can your empire conquer the world?

Unlike Civilization 2 though, The Rise and Rule of Ancient Empires stays ancient. You stay firmly in the past here, no zooming off to space in your custom-built spaceship. In Rise and Rule you?ll be forming various units of infantry and cavalry, as well as philosophers, merchants, and settlers, but as time goes on, you don?t develop new technologies.

Fantasy General

SSI are known for their war and strategy games, having produced a number of good computer wargames such as Clash of Steel. Fantasy General is a follow on from their excellent games Panzer General and Allied General. This time though the action is set in a fantasy world. No Panzers here, you?ll have to learn how to use spells as well as brute force!

The world of Aer is in peril. The Shadowlord threatens to conquer all of Aer, and the Council of Five have selected you as the General to lead the forces of Good against him.

You have a large number of different combat units under your command, including different sorts of infantry, cavalry, skirmishers, bombardiers, spell casters, siege engines and mighty heroes. Each unit type is rated according to cost, movement, armour, melee attack, and spells etc. There are literally hundreds of different unit types, so you won?t be spoilt for choice!

Your first decision is which General to play. There are five to choose from, ranging from battle-hardened warriors to reclusive spell-casters. Each has different abilities, and can lead different troops, so really there are five campaigns in one here.

Fantasy Wars PG Game Review Random Nonsense Fantasy Wars Fans of the miniaturesboard game Battle Lore and the older computer game Fantasy General will appreciate

Once you have decided on a General it?s off to war. You decide on your initial troop roster, and proceed to deploy your army. As your forces come into contact with the enemy (and hopefully survive), they will gain experience, thus becoming more effective in future battles. As General, you gain Gold by capturing cities, achieving victories ahead of schedule etc. With this Gold you can buy new units, or spend it on research. During the game, upgraded units become available as research is completed. Thus, as the game progresses, you will develop a core of experienced combat units that will follow you from battle to battle.

As well as Gold, your armies may well come across Magic, volunteer troops, and those mighty heroes I mentioned.

Monster Truck Madness

MONSTER trucks are everyday vehicles (usually vans and utes) that have been altered to give them huge wheels. The wheels are often as big or bigger than the vehicle, and the van or ute’s body can clear the ground by up to three metres.

In the United States, these monster trucks are great favourites, and draw big crowds whenever they have races or exhibitions. One of the draw-cards is when the monster trucks do a jump over a line of cars, usually trashing them beneath their huge wheels.
